Mercato delle Erbe: what to eat and buy

Mercato delle Erbe

Mercato delle Erbe is a vibrant covered food market located in Bologna’s city center. It’s a must-visit spot to enjoy local cuisine, shop for fresh produce, and soak in the lively atmosphere.

Read where to eat, what to buy, and the best way to explore it.

Mercato delle Erbe: a local food market in Bologna

Originally designed in 1910 by engineer Arturo Carpi and architect Luigi Mellucci, Mercato delle Erbe housed treccole, traditional food stalls relocated from Piazza Maggiore.

During World War II, the building served as a military barracks. After sustaining heavy damage from bombings, it reopened in 1949 with a renewed design that harmonized with the rebuilt surroundings.

In 2014, a major renovation transformed the Mercato delle Erbe.
While maintaining its traditional food stalls, it now features restaurants and wine shops, making it one of the best Bologna food markets.

Today, thousands explore this bustling space daily, enjoying its unique blend of history and modernity.

What to buy at Mercato delle Erbe

At Mercato delle Erbe you can buy local food from Emilia Romagna and Italy.

Discover cheese shops offering authentic Parmigiano Reggiano, traditional butchers with mortadella and prosciutto, and even a fresh fish stall.

Looking for something unusual?

You’ll also find a Macelleria Equina—a horse butcher specializing in horse meat. While unusual to some, it’s a local delicacy worth trying.

If you look closely a few shops will also sell balsamic vinegar of Modena. Choose wisely because it's easy to fall into a tourist trap and buy a low-quality cheap one.
